As a documentary family photographer, I do not pose my clients. Instead, I allow the events to naturally unfold and in my experience, it always results in pictures that are far better than anything I could have imagined in my head or staged.
Here’s how this picture came about. Just as we were wrapping up this family photography session – and what usually happens when I say “ok, I think we are done for now” is that the kids do something amazing or cool or crazy, so I always make sure my camera stays out until the very last moment – the girls decided to play with a ball in the back garden. And naturally, a few minutes into the game the ball ended up in their swimming pool that hasn’t even been cleaned yet after the winter.
Cue the poor dad who had to fish the ball out of the poor using the variety of available tools, all while balancing on the edge of it trying not to plunge into it. And me, who after seeing these four girls naturally line up, climbing over the fence and carefully but quickly (because you never know how long will a moment like this last) moving back just to the edge of the pool in order to get this shot, and also trying not to fall into it.
